When Is a Durolane Injection Right for You?

By Essendon Sports Medicine Team
At Essendon Sports Medicine, we see many patients who struggle with persistent joint pain, particularly in the knee and hip, due to osteoarthritis or previous injuries. One treatment option that can offer lasting relief without surgery is a Durolane injection — a safe, non-surgical approach to joint pain that may help you move more freely and comfortably.
So, when might Durolane be right for you? Let’s explore.
What Is Durolane?
Durolane is a single-injection hyaluronic acid (HA) treatment, designed to restore lubrication and cushioning within the joint. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your joints that helps them move smoothly. In osteoarthritis and certain joint conditions, HA levels decline — leading to pain, stiffness, and inflammation.
Durolane is injected directly into the joint by one of our experienced sports physicians, and it works by supplementing the joint’s natural HA, reducing friction, and providing pain relief.
When Should You Consider a Durolane Injection?
Durolane may be a suitable option if:
1. You have mild to moderate osteoarthritis
Durolane is most commonly used in patients with knee or hip osteoarthritis who are not ready for joint replacement surgery. If your symptoms are interfering with your daily life or exercise routine, but your X-rays or scans show mild to moderate wear and tear, Durolane may provide the relief you’re after.
2. Other treatments haven’t worked
If you’ve already tried:
-
Physiotherapy
-
Weight management
-
Anti-inflammatory medications
-
Cortisone injections
… and you’re still experiencing pain or stiffness, Durolane may be the next step to consider.
Unlike cortisone, which works by reducing inflammation, Durolane aims to improve joint mechanics and hydration. Some patients find it longer lasting (often up to 6–12 months) and gentler on the joint in the long term.
3. You want to delay surgery
For those not ready (or not suitable) for joint replacement surgery, Durolane can act as a bridge — providing relief that allows you to stay active, maintain strength, and delay or avoid surgery altogether.
4. You’re active and want to stay that way
Whether you’re a recreational runner, keen walker, cyclist, or just love being outdoors, Durolane may help reduce joint pain so you can stay active. Our sports physicians regularly work with patients looking to remain mobile and independent without relying on medications or more invasive procedures.
5. You’ve had success with other hyaluronic acid injections
If you’ve previously had Synvisc, Ostenil, or other HA injections and responded well, Durolane could be a good alternative — especially as a single-injection treatment that offers similar or improved results with fewer visits.

What Joints Can Be Treated?
The knee is the most common joint treated with Durolane, but it may also be suitable for:
-
Hips
-
Shoulders
-
Ankles
Our sports physicians will assess your joint health with a clinical exam and diagnostic imaging (such as ultrasound or MRI), and help determine if Durolane is the right treatment for you.
What to Expect During and After the Injection
-
Performed by a specialist: All Durolane injections at Essendon Sports Medicine are carried out by an experienced sports physician, often under ultrasound guidance for accuracy and comfort.
-
Quick and minimally invasive: The procedure usually takes less than 15 minutes.
-
Little to no downtime: Most patients walk out and resume normal activities within a day. Strenuous exercise is usually limited for 48–72 hours.
You may feel some improvement within a few days, but most people notice the full effects between 2–4 weeks post-injection, with benefits potentially lasting 6–12 months.
